On 16th March 1976, Wilson suddenly resigned. It was an amazing act of high political drama, because he declined to give any reasons. Speculation over the years included the descending fog of Alzheimers, some dangerous amorous connections, even the truth of the old KGB chestnut. Everyone who had been around him in those times similarly kept mum, nor even stoked the speculation, a hard act among the political castes for whom gossip and rumours is the staff of life. The most likely explanation is that Wilson received visitors and, left in a room with a loaded pistol, pulled the metaphorical trigger. He wanted, like Blair in years to come, to go with his legacy intact, and indeed his was still warm from the recent historic ‘Yes’ vote in the referendum to remain in the European Common Market (the future European Union).[47]

Michael Cocks was the Labour chief whip known as ‘the ambulance driver.’ It came from his remarkable skills in keeping the majority-less Callaghan government afloat with the votes of ailing Labour’s MPs brought to the House on hospital stretchers. He was among my closest friends in politics until his death in 2001. Cocks, a great foe of arch Left-wing millionaire Tony Wedgwood Benn, was never really a Wilson man either. But he may have been close to the mark when he intimated years later the mystery was connected to Wilson’s inopportune promotion of an obscure Welsh businessman called John Brayley who was knighted, then raised to the peerage, and finally had a short, scandal-starred career as arms minister. Joe Haines later made unsubstantiated claims that at this time Wilson accepted a large brown parcel from Brayley to pay for the running of his private office. There was a hint that it may have been consigned by Mossad.

Cocks’s version was several notches different, namely that Wilson was honey-trapped by MI5 and blackmailed by Brayley who, behind his front activities, enjoyed a remarkably grandiose lifestyle. He supported it by working with Wigg - with whom he shared a passion for horse racing - to earn undercover commissions by manipulating government arms contracts. Brayley’s job at the Ministry of Defence was certainly unusual. Wilson himself once sniffed his protégé could neither make a speech nor read one written for him. When Wilson lost the general election in 1970, it was Brayley who lent the penniless Wilson his London home and chauffeur. Cocks told me: ‘Brayley got his talons stuck into Harold. It’s what it was all about. He was bloody hopeless choosing his friends and got sucked into a one-way street.’ Cocks’ second wife was a prominent Zionist lobbyist. So his remarks might indicate obliquely the possibility of some Mossad connection.

To whom Brayley owed his loyalties remains a mystery. But taking a closer look at Wilson’s behaviour in the closing days of his premiership may supply better clues. In 1976, the future president George H. W. Bush had just been installed as the new Director of the CIA. Hardly was he settled into
